Reports of schools reopening soon false – Govt

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says schools are not reopening soon.

The Ghana Education Service is currently engaging stakeholders in the education sector to provide them with a blueprint on how schools will be made safe for students and teachers in case restrictions to fight the deadly COVID-19 are eased.

As a result of the stakeholder consultation, some reports suggested that schools will be reopened soon.

But addressing the Press and the country at the Information Ministry Thursday, the Information Minister said the reports were false and must be treated with the contempt it deserves.

He said “There was a media report which said schools to reopen soon. With all due respect, that is not true… Consultations of what it takes to reopen schools as part of the potential easing of the general restrictions that we’re living under are what have started”.

Ghana’s borders have been closed to any form of human traffic so has the ban on public gathering been extended to May 31 to ensure that the country is safe and COVID-19 free before they can be opened.

This means that clubs, pubs, Churches, Mosques, schools and other public activities such as parties, weddings have all been put on hold.

Ghana has currently recorded 6,269 positive COVID-19 cases with 31 patients dead as a result of the disease.

Recovered patients are 1,898 and Greater Accra region leads as the region across the country with a huge number of recorded cases.
